Rascals Brewing: Dublin

I found this brewery online randomly on maps and after looking it up, thought it looked quite cool so I had to give it a try. Located in Inchicore, just west of Dublin city center. I also saw online that they happened to have an event tonight, which was a book tour launch of a book called The Devils in the Draught Lines which is a historical analysis of women’s role in Britain’s beer making over the last 1,000 years. So, I got to sit and listen to that. It was pretty cool and unique but ill get to that in the pub review.

The Run

Starting off with the run, which I’ll just get straight to saying was miserable. All in it ended up being 6.75 miles, and my average pace was 10:05, which I think is actually surprisingly not bad given the conditions. For starters, I began the run with cloudy but dry skies, but that didn’t end up lasting for too long because it started pouring and proceeded to not be dry for about 80 percent of the run. Not that rain is the absolute worst thing in the world. You know what I would say is the worst thing in the world while on a run though? Unclear directions. There were too many turn backs and small paths that were easily miss able on this route as well as at one point I was faced with stairs. Additionally, I ended up in this gated apartment complex and the trail/parking lot that it wanted me to go through was completely blocked off and locked. Ended up finding my way out though. Lastly, it took me a quarter mile down the river at the end, which was the fun to run along, but I had to turn and go back because there was no lead out. That stretch before I knew I had to turn around was the highlight of the run though. Building was on the other side a street up though. Made it there in the end.

The Pub

The brewery itself was quite cool. I haven’t seen many, if any breweries of this style in the Dublin area. I also haven’t really looked as I love the traditional Irish pub style and scene. This reminded me exactly of the style of brewery you would find at home in the US or even more specific my home city of Seattle. It was in an industrial business yard and had a very colorful exterior and interior. Inside, there were cool picnic tables in the main seating area, and I was seated in this side area on a stool at a taller table. The place was fairly full for the book launch. They asked when I came in if that was my reasoning for being there. It was probably good I was in a bigger open space than a cozy pub because I was damp as sh*t from running in the rain. I tried a beer that was labeled as a bestseller, called the ‘Strawberry Milkshake IPA’ which to be honest, does not sound very appealing to me. It sounded fun for sure though and I’m always in for fun. IT ended up being quite nice, I wouldn’t say I was able to really identify aspects of a strawberry milkshake if I was given a blind taste testing, but I’m not very good at stuff like that. Side food note, I also got a pizza with Jalapenos and pepperoni that was quite tasty, sort of a classic brewery pizza and looked like they had a proper oven for it.

The book launch was a sort of fun thing to chance upon. It was written by ½ of the beer ladies podcast, so the other host was up there asking the author questions in live interview/ live podcast fashion. Definitely beats the usual sitting on my phone after running somewhere solo. I thought about getting a copy of the book in commemoration as a memento, but I couldn’t justify the 20 euros price tag with the limited of money I’m working with already.

Overall, the brewery was nice, but the run fiasco is definitely harming the rating.
